LinkedIn says you can Use the Follow Hub to Discover Fresh Perspectives and Manage Your Followers. If you’re interested in finding new perspectives to follow on LinkedIn, check out your follow hub. Here you’ll find relevant recommendations for people, for companies and for publications to follow. You can also see and manage who you’re following and who’s following you — all in one place.

You can also unfollow sources if you no longer want to receive their updates, but would like to remain connected on LinkedIn (don’t worry, your connections will never know you unfollowed them). To find your follow hub, click the “Improve my feed” option in the control menu at the top right of any post in your feed (mobile or desktop).

Following your sources is a great way to stay informed on the topics, news and perspectives that matter in your industry. It’s also a great way to arm yourself with information that can help you be more productive as well as successful at work.

You can ask those following to connect on LinkedIn. You know they have an interest in you because they viewed your profile. View their LinkedIn profile also. There may be a mutual reason to connect. Find out if they went to the same school as you did or are they in the same group(s)s that you are in.

Visibility is opportunity on LinkedIn. Have them join your network so you can increase your visibility on their network.

LinkedIn Connection Search. LinkedIn just reintroduced searching of your connections connections. Here is how LinkedIn describes it

LinkedIn search: See connections of your connections.

“It’s all about who you know and who they know. The best referrals and new connections often come from people in your extended network, so we’ve added a “Connections of” filter so you can easily search your connections’ connections. If you don’t want others to see your list of connections, simply change your settings so that only you can see them. We’ve also added the ability to click on mutual connections from search results so that you can quickly see everyone you have in common — make sure to reference those people when you reach out!”

If you are in #socialselling, sales, business development, or lead generation this is a game changer! Wake up salespeople, if you want to find a referral, or someone that can help you meet a decision maker, or you need a champion within an organization searching your connections for their connections is a helpful way to go.

Define who is your target person, what level of management are they? As an example we will first start with a search for VP or Vice President of sales. Then select people search and LinkedIn will provide the results.

Keep searching for different titles until you get the results you want. Once you find your ideal customer, client, or hiring manager see who your connections know. You have the filters to the right so you can select either location, company, OR “connections of”.

Once you have everything filtered for your results send a message to your connection to either ask for an introduction or ask them if you can use their name as a reference. Quite often your connection may not know the person well so that is why you could ask them if you can reference their name in a connection request. EXAMPLE: Mike I see that you are connected to Joe A Smith can I use your name as a source for my connecting to Bob Jones.”

Make it as easy as possible you your connection to yes yes to help you out with networking. Leave them an out in case they don’t know the connection well enough to refer you. You connections have value because they add visibility to your network. Use sharing wisely to add value to your connections as well.

Yes, export all of your LinkedIn connections.

Why and how do you export your connections? Because when LinkedIn changes and makes updates to the platform you don’t want to loose your information. If your computer crashes and cannot be repaired you should save your connections file on a flash drive.

It is easy to export your connections and it only takes 7 steps.

The first step: is too go to the tool bar at the top of your LinkedIn page and hover over “My Network”. A drop down will appear.

Second step: click on “Connections” from the drop down.

Third step: when the connections page appears click on the gear in the top right corner

Step four: The next page will show up and again in the top right corner under “advanced settings” will be “Export Connection”

Step five: The next page will be Export to Microsoft Outlook (.CSV file). IMPORTANT, There are other options but disregard them UNLESS you have a MAC!

Step six: Save the file to your desktop.

Step seven: Convert the file to excel so that you can manipulate the info.

LinkedIn gives you First Name Last Name, Email Address, Company name and current position. There are a lot of empty columns that you will have to delete. Delete the empty ones so you have a manageable file to manipulate. You can set it up by company or the easiest to alphabetize all of your connections.

Do it now because LinkedIn will eliminate this feature with the new user interface.

Interview with Bruce Bixler
Please introduce yourself to the readers of this blog and update us on your latest business endeavors

Hi Stathis, My name is Bruce Bixler, seven years ago I lost my job. Everyone told me to get on LinkedIn. I got on LinkedIn and nothing happened. Went to several LinkedIn workshops and the only thing the speakers told us was how to set up a profile. I wanted to know HOW to use it.

So I started doing my own presentations to show others how to use LinkedIn. I did land a job but kept on learning everything I could about LinkedIn. I started to get paid for my presentations and workshop. Now that I’m at retirement age I want to transition into doing LinkedIn full time and quit my regular retail job.

Why have you focused specifically on Linkedin compared to other social media platforms available?

I focused on LinkedIn because it was the most professional digital platform and it intrigued me the most. LinkedIn does not broadcast all it’s changes so you have to either find it and learn about it from others.

From your experience, do companies leverage the intelligence obtained through Linkedin or they don’t rip the benefits yet? This relates to the digital age which should be embraced by modern corporations in order to survive.

Large companies know how to use LinkedIn but the 80 – 90 percent of small to mid sized companies don’t know, don’t know all the tools, don’t have someone knowledgeable, or don’t have the time to reap the benefits of LinkedIn.

Your forecast on social media in the future. How they will evolve?

A peek into the future of digital will be companies will need to embrace visual or video like Tumblr, Meerkat, Periscope, or Snapchat and other future digital platforms. Businesses can no longer avoid social, digital, or visual media and keep up.

Your LinkedIn Profile: A Movable Fete!

Your LinkedIn profile is a business networking platform and profile marketing tool!! If you don’t like where a section on your profile is, just MOVE it! What, you didn’t know that you can move most sections of your LinkedIn profile? Eighty per cent of the people on LinkedIn have no idea that just about every section on LinkedIn can be rearranged. And even sections within some of the sections they can also be moved.

Let’s start with the main sections of your LinkedIn profile. Yes you can move your summary, skills, experience, volunteer experience, education, organizations, certifications, courses, honors and awards, languages, publications, projects, and additional information. The question is which section do you want where?

To change the order of the sections on your profile page.
Move your cursor over Profile at the top of your homepage and select Edit Profile.
Move your cursor over the section you’d like to move, then click and hold the Reorder Section icon in the top right.
Drag the section to a new location.
Release the Reorder Section icon to drop the section into place.

Most people start off with their summary section to give the profile viewer a snapshot of your profile where you tell them who you are, what you do and how you help them. Now the LinkedIn default is to place your experience next. But do not ever use any LinkedIn default setting. So this gives you an opportunity to move this section of your profile.

So why would you want to move sections of your profile? If you are in business this would give you an opening statement to place your summary at the top of your LinkedIn profile. You could follow this up by the experience you have had regarding the experience and accomplishments you need to solve a client’s problems. After the experience you can place the skills section with its endorsements from others for social proof of your success.

If you are in job search you also may start with the SUMMARY SECTION and use that in place of your elevator pitch. Make it an elongated version and tell recruiters what you do, what you have done in past work experience and how you will solve a new companies pain points. But the second section for job search should be your SKILLS SECTION because that is what recruiters and hiring managers are searching for. Make it easy for them to find your skills.

The EXPERIENCE SECTION if you have two or more current positions on LinkedIn can be rearranged.

1. Move your cursor over Profile at the top of your homepage and select Edit Profile.
2. Move your cursor over the position you’d like to rearrange.
3. Click and hold the Up/Down arrow to the right of your position name and drag it into the desired position.

Note: You can’t rearrange the order of past positions. Those will always appear with the most recent position held showing first.
Rearrange current positions

Recommendations, following, groups, companies, and schools and Pulse articles are not movable.

Another area that you can rearrange parts of is the EDUCATION SECTION.

1. Move your cursor over Profile at the top of your homepage and select Edit Profile.
2. Move your cursor over the education entry you’d like to rearrange.
3. Click and hold the Up/Down arrow to the right of your school name and drag it into the desired position.

Note: The first entry listed in the Education section appears in the box at the top of your profile. You can’t display more than one entry in the top box of your profile.

Next you can rearrange your publications.

Rearrange publication entries
1. Move your cursor over Profile at the top of your homepage and select Edit Profile.
2. Move your cursor over the publication you’d like to rearrange.
3. Click and hold the Up/Down arrow to the right of your publication title and drag it into the desired position.

You also can rearrange your whole volunteer section but then you can also rearrange the different volunteer activities within the section.

Finally the other movable section is the skills section.

To reorder the skills on your profile:
1. Move your cursor over Profile at the top of your homepage and select Edit Profile.
2. Scroll down to the Skills & Endorsements section and click anywhere in the box.
3. Move your cursor over the skill you’d like to move, then left click and drag to re-order. You can do this for each skill you’d like to reorder.
Click Save.

And finally you can move your endorsers, LinkedIn will allow users to change the order of which photos show up for a certain skill.

1. Edit your profile then scroll to skills
2. Then select “manage endorsements”
3. Select the skill that you want to reorder
4. Select the endorsers you want featured by un-checking their name
5. Then click save
6. Go back to edit and click (make a check) in the box next to the names you deleted and add them back
7. Click save and the most recent adds will show up

How to Use LinkedIn Contacts and Messaging Notes.

If you are on LinkedIn you have to take advantage of the Contacts system I call it their CRM – Connections Resource management. When used with the LinkedIn messaging it is a great tool to use to stay top of mind with connections and, if you are in job search, in contact with recruiters.

Where are meassages on LinkedIn? They are at the tool bar on the top right side of your home or profile page. Scroll over the envelope and a drop down will appear, you have two choices invitations or messages. Click on the messages link.

Your messages will appear along with a side bar on the right hand side of the page.

The sidebar includes your connections photo, name, title, and an area for notes, so you can note when, where, and how you met. These notes are only visible by you. There is a second button on the sidebar for reminders.

The reminder will let you respond or send a message to the recruiter about a position or to send a note to them about a follow up meeting. The reminder page is produced when you click on the bell in the top right corner of the sidebar. There is also a number at the top far right corner the sidebar which is the number of mutual connections you have with your contact.

Checking your LinkedIn profile for messages should be a twice a day routine. If you are in job search or in business it pays to stay in touch with those you are connected to. You can set the reminder to notify you by email to contact your connection in one day, one week, or one month, to follow up with them.

Take advantage of the system LinkedIn has set up. Most people on LinkedIn don’t know this is available, or they don’t use it. If you are in search make sure you use it, it will a great addition to your job search strategy and keep you on target.

Have you added Websites to Your LinkedIn Profile?

Have you added Websites to Your LinkedIn Profile?

Here is how you do it.

You can display up to 3 website links on your profile, and they can be added from the Edit Profile page. To add a website:

Move your cursor over Profile at the top of your homepage and select Edit Profile.
Click Edit Contact Info near the bottom right of the profile overview section. The profile overview section has your photo in it.
Click the “Edit” icon next to Websites.
Choose the type of website from the dropdown list.
Note: If you choose “Other” from the list, you can type in your own website title.

Copy and paste your website address into the URL field.
Click Save.
The websites you add will be displayed in the Contact Info section of your profile.

So now you know how to set them up, why do you want to do it?
1) If you are in business having your company website will generate leads for your business
2) If you are in search it will give you an edge in the recruiting game because ONLY 7% of profiles on LinkedIn have a personal website for recruiters to view.
3) If you are in Social media it will give you an additional voice to share your knowledge

Make sure when you set up your websites to edit each one. By edit I mean to choose “OTHER” instead of LinkedIn’s default setting of company website, personal website, my blog, RSS feed, or portfolio. The reason you want to do this is for SEO (Search Engine Optimization). It helps your profile standout among all the other profiles on LinkedIn with a higher ranking with Google search.

How do you like the New LinkedIn Profile? Is it too simple?

Is it easy or hard to find the features you normally use?

I think it is easier. You just have to know where to look

on the new profile.

At the top left is Home, followed by Profile which has a drop down to edit profile. Next is Network which is your

contacts adding connections and finding Alumni. To the right of network is jobs. The next tool is interests which

has a drop down for Companies, groups, and influencers.

Directly above jobs and interests is the search bar. On the left side of the search bar is another drop down.

The default is to search for people. The other options are updates which has been combined with Signal, jobs,

companies, inbox, and groups. Most of these: people, companies, updates, and groups can be advanced searched,

which is still on the right side of the search box.

To the right of the advanced search is an envelope for messages. Next to that is a flag for notifications. The

next Icon is a + sign and figure of a head for adding connections from your different email sources. The final icon

to the right is your photo which has a drop down for signing out, account type, job posting, company page,

language, privacy settings, and help center.

Directly below those icons are premium solutions and upgrades to LinkedIn. So that is the run down about the new

profile look, and where all the tools are located.
